Van Gogh Brabant & Van Gogh Museum

Inspired by light, connected by Brabant

ASML and Van Gogh Museum extend innovative partnership

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s most well-known and inspiring artists from the Netherlands with roots in Brabant. ASML shares Vincent’s innovative attitude and fascination with light, and we feel, just like him, closely connected with Brabant. That’s why we’re proud to extend our long-time partnership with the Van Gogh Museum until the end of 2028. We’re using our joint expertise to inspire people with the world’s largest Van Gogh art collection and to safeguard his masterpieces for future generations.

Together, we’re taking the next steps to preserve this invaluable cultural heritage and uncover which techniques and materials Van Gogh used. The innovative technologies we’re developing as part of the partnership will be used in a study of Vincent van Gogh’s Dutch period, most of which was in Brabant, where he started his innovative search for light and color. In the coming years, our engineers will be working closely with the museum to establish the brand-new ASML Science Centre, a research center in the museum that will be visible to visitors.

To celebrate 50 years of the Van Gogh Museum we asked visitors how Vincent’s work moves them.

Located in Amsterdam, the Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh artwork in the world. The museum seeks to make the life and work of Vincent van Gogh as well as the art of his time accessible, reaching as many people as possible in order to enrich and inspire them.

In addition to a substantial financial contribution, ASML has allocated a team of engineers to support the museum through research, are developing educational programs for young students, and become a presence in one of the museum’s most famous galleries.

ASML collaborates with the Van Gogh Museum to support research into the conservation of Vincent van Gogh’s world-famous paintings.

Partners in Science

“Paintings fade like flowers.” – Vincent van Gogh, April 1889

This quote proves true, as many of his paintings and drawings have changed significantly over time due to color degradation. As part of the partnership, a team of ASML engineers work with the Van Gogh Museum’s restoration and conservation studio to support research into the conservation of Van Gogh’s paintings.

Together we investigate how external factors, including light, affect the paint Van Gogh used. By using this knowledge to optimize display conditions and minimize further degradation of the collection, we ensure it can be admired by future generations.

Educational programs

“I am always doing what I cannot do yet, in order to learn how to do it.” – Vincent van Gogh, August 1885

We are developing educational materials, such as 'Masterminds & Masterpieces', for students in primary and secondary schools that help young people discover how innovation drove Van Gogh to experiment with paint, color and light. The artist’s curiosity was key to his craftmanship, and together with the museum, we encourage students to follow in his footsteps – and, like our partnership, connect science with art.

ASML Gallery

The gallery dedicated to Van Gogh’s early work, including the masterpiece “The Potato Eaters,” is named the ASML Gallery. The village of Nuenen, situated in the Dutch province of Brabant and not far from ASML’s headquarters, was the place where Van Gogh made his artistic breakthrough and where he became one of the most innovative painters of his generation.

Charity

Through our partnership with the Van Gogh Museum, we aim to open up cultural initiatives to people that, due to their circumstances, they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to enjoy. By making Vincent van Gogh’s art accessible to everyone, we hope it will inspire and bring color, comfort, community and creativity to their lives.

Van Gogh Brabant

ASML supports Van Gogh Brabant in preserving the artist’s legacy and local landmarks in the Brabant region.

Born and raised in the Brabant region in the south of the Netherlands, Van Gogh has a legacy that lives on there: his search for perspective and light characterizes his Brabant period, most evident in his first masterpiece, “The Potato Eaters,” which he painted in Nuenen in 1885.

Van Gogh Brabant seeks to preserve and develop Van Gogh’s cultural heritage in Brabant for present and future generations through exhibitions, cultural activities and educational programs. By linking the artistic genius of Van Gogh to the innovative spirit of the Brainport region, ASML and Van Gogh Brabant are able to further enrich the story of Brabant.

Vincent’s Lightlab

The Van Gogh Village Museum explores and celebrates Vincent van Gogh’s life and work during his time in Nuenen, Noord Brabant. Van Gogh never stopped learning and experimenting in his search for perspective and light, that started here in Nuenen. We want to pass on that curiosity to the next generation in Vincent’s Lightlab. By combining technology, art and creativity, we’ve created a unique experience that will not only contribute to the innovative image of the region but also inspire the next generation of artists and scientists.

Educational programs

Van Gogh Brabant and ASML are committed to preserving and developing Vincent van Gogh’s cultural heritage for present and future generations. ASML will support and develop educational materials for primary and secondary schools that highlight the important role that Brabant played in the life and work of Van Gogh and the impact he has had on society.
